ELEVATING THE VOICES OF AND SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES DISPROPORTIONATELY IMPACTED BY CLIMATE CHANGE
Low-income and predominantly BIPOC neighborhoods in our region face a higher degree of environmental risk factors such as proximity to polluted waterways, busy streets and highways, industrial sites and dilapidated infrastructure. One Roof Foundation believes all children should have access to clean air to breath and clean water to drink. Over the past few years, we have removed 600+ lbs of garbage from various Seattle neighborhoods and provided air filters to classrooms at Concord Elementary.
Air Filters
Everyone should have clean air to breathe, but not everyone does.
According to the Washington State Department of Health, air quality varies vastly across Seattle, and the residents of the Duwamish Valley are subject to disproportionately high levels of air pollution resulting from proximity to industrial facilities, the airport, and highways.
To help offset some of the resulting negative health impacts and improve learning conditions, One Roof Foundation has partnered with Duwamish River Community Coalition & University of Washington School of Public Health. This partnership started by purchasing and installing HEPA grade air filters in every classroom and learning space in South Park’s Concord International Elementary School.
Neighborhood Cleanups
One way One Roof helps create healthier environments is through community clean ups.
Over the past two years we have locked arms with community members to remove over 600 pounds of litter from various Seattle neighborhoods.

High School Externship
One Roof Foundation co-designed and implemented a first-of-its-kind high school externship to provide cross sector learnings about careers in sustainability & environmental justice for youth from impacted neighborhoods.
Partners included: Amazon, the City of Seattle Office of Sustainability & the Environment, Climate Pledge Arena, Duwamish River Community Coalition, King County Parks & Recreation, Port of Seattle, Sea Potential, Seattle 2030 District, Unico Properties, and University of Washington – EarthLab.
